5 MOVIES THAT MADE SUNGLASSES ICONIC

DARK SUNNIES ALL YEAR ROUND

Article by Eleonora Mezzo

Ever since the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, where Audrey looks at the store windows eating a croissant, black sunglasses have become an iconic trend all year round. No matter the season, black sunnies are the best accessory for making an outfit more casual, cover our eyes whenever we don’t wear makeup and the best weapon to look at someone without them even noticing (I’m sure I’m not the only one who does it). Anyways, since I love cinema (and fashion) I had the idea of picking the scenes from my favourite movies list which made sunglasses iconic.

WHY I CHOSE POLETTE

For this post, I had the possibility to work with Polette, the online optician offering an endless range of both eyeglasses and sunglasses for affordable prices (frame+lenses from €14.98!). The brand offered me the opportunity to order a frame from Polette.com and I am more than satisfied with the quality of the sunglasses (literally all my friends asked me to borrow them at least once)! Since I was really happy with my experience with Polette I decided to write a post by incorporating both cinema and fashion in order to show you the beauty of each frame you can find on their website by talking about a topic I love: movies.

The frame I’m wearing is called Notting Hill, the same name as my favourite movie. Coincidence? I think not.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

“We belong to nobody, and nobody belongs to us. We don’t even belong to each other.” – Holly Golightly

Here the greatest actress of all time plays the role of Holly Golightly, who, I hope, you all know. Audrey made the black sunglasses famous by wearing them in the opening scene of the movie. Would you like to have a similar pair? Then make sure to check the links below!

the breakfast club

“We are all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all” – Andrew Clark

The Breakfast Club is hands down one of the best movies ever made and, of course, I had to include it on the list. The sunnies which made this movie famous appear in the papular scene in which the “nerd” played Anthony Michael Hall gives the powerful and innocent speech about what’s life like as a teenager.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

“You can never go too far” – Ferris Bueller

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is on the teen-movies-which-everyone-should-watch list. I’ve always known this movie but I had never actually opened Netflix to watch it until a few weeks ago. The whole story is extremely funny, perfect to watch with friends or just if you are having a bad day.

Top gun

“You can be my wingman anytime” – Maverik

First of all, we can all agree that Top Gun wouldn’t be the same if Tom Cruise didn’t wear the aviator sunglasses, which is the reason why I had to include it in the article. Apart from being one of the movies that best remind me of my childhood, Top Gun is probably the only action movies I actually don’t mind watching.

The blues brothers

“There are 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.” – Eldwood

The last movie I felt I had to add to the list is The Blues Brothers, which tells the story of a couple of musicians who, right after being released from prison, recruits friends for a band in order to collect money for a certain nun. The splendid music and the voice of Aretha Franklin will accompany you from the opening scene till the end of the movie.
